My dad, Cantor Harry Rabinowitz, was born in Volksrust in 1914.  I found this 1911 advert in the Gitlin Library three weeks ago. This job was applied for by my zaida N M Rabinowitz. Hence my dad was born in Volksrust!

Finally, we have had great fun in the past few days  on Facebook identifying these people from Woodstock Cape Town in 1949.

Thanks to Abe Gulis for providing the photo.

We wish  Abe and his family a “Long Life” on the passing of his beloved sister, Channa Gulis Eidelman.

If you have an interesting photo to “share”, please email me. There is no point in hoarding them in a shoe box! Let us enjoy our wonderful memories of our Jewish Life!

  1. Lived in Edenvale from 1949 (aged 4) until 1975, where my parents played a prominent role in the community.

My father, George, was a businessman there, and ,for many years, a productive town councillor who served two terms as the town’s mayor. Both he and my mother, Margot, did a tremendous amount of charitable work there. The Edenvale old aged home was a project my mother set out to create, and to this day I marvel at the fortitude she had, soldiering on with the project to care for those whom she felt needed the facility, while she suffered from Cancer during the last ten years of her life.

  2. Both my Mother’s and Father’s families are from Germiston.
Kindly send me more information snd a questionnaire.

  3. Grew up in Vanderbijlpark. At its peak we had less than thirty Jewish families, but a well attended shul and and cheder, communal institutions and all the typical inter- family associations and trivial bickerings that exist in any close-knit small-town community.

  4. My great grandfather Nathan Rakow was a bootmaker in the vacinity of the New Unified goldmine and later a general merchant in Roodepoort between 1900 and 1939 so I would be very interested in the volume dealing with that area.

  5. What a wonderful idea and good work putting together the Jews Of South Africa.
I feel we were the finest lot of Jews, something very special about us all.
We were very caring and a great Jewish community in ever little small and big town
My family came from the Southern Suburbs of Johannesburg. Regents Park, Rosettenville. We had a wonderful Shul South Eastern JewishShul and Jewish life style
I am doing a book on my late husband Hymie Beinart.
Anyone from Vrede in the O.F.S who would like to tell us some stories
Humorous . and anything they would like to tell the world and ex Vredeiets
